A thankyou message on behalf of the organisers of the recent Spa Valley Diesel Gala;
I would like to say a BIG thank you to all those people who travelled far and wide in order to patronise the Spa Valley Railway's first diesel gala.  Whilst we had little control of the sweltering weather which we trust did not detract too much from the event, we hope you all had as much enjoyment as we had organising and running the event"

9016 worked the return 'Queen of Scots' on Monday from Doncaster to Clapham Yard as booked but returned via the Midland Main line due to operational problems on the ECML at Stevenage. The loco is now back at Ropley but will not be working the Steam Dreams ECS today because the ECS loco is to remain on the the rear of the train to Portsmouth and as the train is vacuum braked this is unsuitable for Deltics due to the requirement of the engine to remain idling to sustain air brake pressure.
The loco move from Doncaster to Kidderminster was cancelled yesterday. Another attempt will be made today with the same times as yesterday.

D1015 worked the VSOE as expected and due to problems with 'Taw Valley' the Western  piloted the steamer on the return journey to the capital. A photo of the train is here and here

Confirmation has been received that the proposed D1015 tour to Newquay has been postponed until next year, this is because of pathing problems on the Newquay Branch. One piece of good news on the D1015 railtour front is that Hertfordshire Railtours have details of a Kings Cross - York trip thereby recreating D1023's 'Western Talisman' tour of 1976. Details of this are here
I have been asked to point out that all trains at the GCRN gala next weekend are 'Top & Tailed' and not double headed. This is because run round facilities are not yet in place at Ruddington or Loughborough. Some gen for photographers is that further shunting of the stock between Ruddington and Rushcliffe Halt will take-place on Weds/Thurs/Fri 16/17/18 July in preparation for the gala. There will be plenty of opportunities for different shots (like a Class 25 on load 9 MK2!!). All shunting and moves are subject to availability and no timings will be available.

56097, which is undergoing restoration at Cardiff Cathays, has had the power unit lifted out. Photos here and here. The unit was sent to another site where it will undergo an 'F' exam and work is now underway to thoroughly clean and repaint the engine room. The parking brake frame and traction motor blower were also removed for overhaul. Since the locomotive's bodywork is in reasonably good order it is not intended to carry out any significant external repainting until the locomotive nears completion. The exception has been the battery box doors which were showing signs of corrosion, no doubt as a result of their exposure to acid. Both battery box doors have now been shot blasted and repainted. It is hope to begin the bogie during the Autumn with a second set of bogies obtained as a source of spares.

On Sunday 9016 worked the ECS from Alton to Waterloo for a steam charter to Exeter. The Deltic then shadowed the tour west and worked the return as far as Yeovil before following light and returning the ECS to Alton later in the day. A photo is here.  9016 was due to haul ECS again this week for another steam charter however repairs to the Deltic mean that it will miss this trip.
The same charter however will make use of 50031 on arrival at Waterloo tomorrow. The 50 will be utilised to haul the empties via a circular route from Waterloo to Waterloo enabling the steamer to be pointing in the right direction..

D9009 has been diagnosed as having a fault in the no.1 end power unit and until further investigations are complete will be restricted to one engine only - a fairly common occurrence on some Deltics during the latter part of 1981! As such Alycidon is booked to run light from Barrow Hill to Didcot tomorrow to collect a steam loco and then return to the roundhouse the same day.
D1062 moved under its own power at the weekend - the first time since 1998. The Western, currently undergoing overhaul, moved a short distance up and down a siding at Bridgnorth utilising one of her engines and no major problems were found.

The railtour itinery for D1015 has been further hit with the news that the planned October tour to Fishguard has been cancelled because of engineering work. 47376 was successfully started at Toddington yesterday evening. The engine was run for nearly an hour with no problems. Photos are here and here
News on 37264 at Tyseley saw the power unit lifted out on Tuesday and the generator split off. The generator has been sent away for cleaning / overhaul - the first such attention since 1984. The engine bay will now be cleaned and repainted, whilst the power unit receives an 'E' examination and thorough degrease before the generator is reattached. Inspection of the power unit show it to be in good condition considering it has been stood out of use since late 1999. No.2 cab rebuild continues with all major structural work, electrics, conduit and cubicle now completed - such was the damage due to water ingress that all items have had to be fully stripped down and overhauled. Bodywork replating has commenced in the worst areas and will continue throughout the summer before any repaint is undertaken. Photos are here and here
The Dartmoor Railway have returned one of the three Fragonset 73's stored at Meldon to operational condition - a successful test run has been undertaken and 73134 will haul a special train on Saturday. Details are here and recent photos of this loco will be most welcome!

And finally...many of you may not be aware that Luciano Pavarotti was due to perform an open air concert in Llangollen this coming Saturday however the Italian tenor has decided to pull the plug at the last minute. The towns Diesel Group have their own theory why - Click here to find out. The fat mans no show will not be affecting 37240 which will be hauling the
1200,1400 & 1600 departures ex Llangollen on Saturday.

Further information with regard to the TPWS fault on 46035 on Saturday is that the loco was piloted by 47756 from Bristol to Penzance with the locos working in tandem and on arrival at Long Rock depot the TPWS fault was rectified however the Peak developed a speedo fault and the 47 was once again required to pilot the train. It was hoped that the pair could continue to Birmingham but traincrew problems meant the 46 was removed at Bristol leaving the 47 to attempt the Lickey alone with rather less than spectacular results....a nine and a half minute ascent was recorded!
46035 is currently at Barton Hill depot and it is planned to move the loco to London on Wednesday on an EWS service.
Work has started on the restoration of D5353(27007) at Ropley. The engine is seized but work is underway on a overhaul and this is expected to take 12 months to complete along with electrical and bodywork repairs. The loco will be finished in BR blue as 27007. Photos are here and here

9016 remains at Doncaster and it would appear that the reason for it missing the return trip of the VSOE (and the Steam Dreams tour today) is the alleged condition of the locos brake blocks. An exam has taken place at Doncaster TMD and the loco is expected to return south to Hornsey later next week.
09004 was moved from the Lavender Line to the Spa Valley Railway on Wednesday and 73140 is expected to follow in the next couple of weeks.
Photos from the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway during Cheltenham Gold Cup week can be seen here. Further news from the GWR is that the loop at Gotherington is out of use at present meaning that the 1340 diesel diagram leaves at 1230 and only runs between Toddington and Winchcombe during March.
A timetable for the first of this months diesel days at the Kent & East Sussex Railway on the 23rd is here. Trains will only be running between Tenterden and Rolvenden although it is hoped that the full length of the line will be available on the 30th.

Shunter Bashers may be interested in the following;
Everyone, I am looking at organising a special event at the Isle of White Steam Railway.  The event will be the use of the Class 03 shunter (D2059/03059) on a return trip over the whole line, and the use of the Class 05 (D2554/05001) on brake van rides within the station area.  The Class 05 will probably be on brake van rides as it is not train brake fitted.  In contrast to the other events that I have organised this one may require advance purchase of tickets or the train being chartered, therefore I am keen to get a feel for how much interest there would be in such an event.  I would imagine tickets would be in the £10 region and would also provide freedom of the line for the day on the railway's steam services.  If this is of serious interest to yourself, please would you be good enough to e-mail me on my address below so that I can see if it is worth progressing this any further.  Many thanks for your time, and to Tim for posting this message on his web-site.

A recent decision by EWS concerning all trains it operates using non-TPWS fitted traction will see some of the EWS crewed, diesel hauled railtours restricted to a maximum of 75mph as of April 1st. Locos affected are the Fifty Fund/Class 50 Society 50’s, D1015 and D345 as well as LNWR’s 46035. There are plans to fit both the 40 and 46 with TPWS in the near future and the Fifty Alliance intend to have to 50’s equipped by the end of the year when the ruling will apply to all operators.
The CTRL depot at Beechbrook Farm has started to be decommissioned now construction work in the area is almost complete. The Class 14’s and 20’s are not currently at the site and it is assumed that these locos will start to return to the respective ‘homes’ in the near future.
45133 has been invited to spend the summer at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The loco is currently having its air tanks re-certified and a move by rail will depend on the satisfactory completion of this work. 40145 has been requested for the NYMR gala in April along with Rileys 37038 and 37197. It is thought 2 EWS class 37's have also been requested.
Restoration work on 37240 continues at Llangollen with the broken camshaft having now been replaced and work now concentrating on replacing some liner seals - the loco will be ready for firing up soon and along with a bogie change will see the loco hopefully ready for the March diesel gala at the railway, two photos are here and here.

The DEPG have announced the comeback date for the overhauled D9526. The loco will haul a special four coach train from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back on April 12th. Anyone interested in helping financially or otherwise with the restoration of D5705 can contact The Bury Hydraulic Group on this email link m_r_ward@hotmail.com. The unique Co-Bo loco has not been started since the mid-seventies when the engine was withdrawn from BR departmental use although a spare Crossley engine has been obtained recently and is a big step forward for the group involved with the restoration.
